One of the most common questions we get at Scholarship Navigator is: “Should I apply for CSC through Type A (embassy) or Type B (university direct)?”
Most websites give you a vague answer. We will give you an honest, clear comparison based on helping 1,500+ students through both routes — so you can make the right decision for your specific situation.
What Is CSC Type A?
Type A is the Embassy Recommendation route. You apply through the Chinese Embassy or your country’s government authority (in Pakistan, this is HEC — the Higher Education Commission). The embassy or HEC evaluates your application and nominates you to the CSC. The CSC then allocates you to a university.
Key point: With Type A, you do not choose your university directly — the CSC assigns you based on availability and your preferences.
What Is CSC Type B?
Type B is the University Direct Application route. You apply directly to a specific CSC-affiliated Chinese university of your choice. The university evaluates your application and nominates you to the CSC. You have full control over which university you apply to.
Type A vs Type B — Side by Side Comparison
| Factor | Type A (Embassy) | Type B (University) |
|---|---|---|
| Who processes it | Chinese Embassy / HEC Pakistan | Chinese university directly |
| University choice | Limited — CSC assigns university | Full control — you choose |
| Deadline (Pakistan) | December – January | December – March (varies by university) |
| Competition level | Very high — national quota | High — but more university slots |
| Stipend | ✅ Full stipend always included | ⚠️ Some Type B offers no stipend — check carefully |
| Professor contact | Not required | Strongly recommended for PhD/Master’s |
| Where to apply | HEC portal + CSC portal | campuschina.org + university portal |
| Best for | Students flexible on university | Students with a specific university in mind |
| JW form received | JW201 | JW202 |
The Type B “No Stipend” Trap — What Nobody Tells You
This is the most important thing to know about Type B that most websites skip: not all Type B CSC offers include a monthly stipend.
Some universities offer Type B CSC with only tuition and accommodation covered — no monthly living allowance. This is called a partial Type B. Before accepting any Type B offer, confirm with the university whether the stipend (¥2,500–¥3,500/month) is included or not. This difference can amount to ¥30,000–¥42,000 per year.
Which Route Is Right for You?
Choose Type A if:
- You are flexible about which university you attend
- You have a very strong academic record (GPA 3.5+)
- You are a Pakistani student and have a good HEC nomination chance
- You want guaranteed stipend without checking individual university offers
Choose Type B if:
- You have a specific university or professor in mind
- You are applying for Master’s or PhD and have already contacted a supervisor
- You missed the HEC/embassy deadline but university deadlines are still open
- You want to apply to multiple universities simultaneously to increase your chances
Can You Apply for Both Type A and Type B at the Same Time?
Technically yes — you can apply through HEC (Type A) and also directly to universities (Type B) simultaneously. However, if you receive both offers, you must choose one and withdraw from the other. Applying to multiple Type B universities is allowed and recommended — apply to 3–5 universities to maximize your chances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Type A or Type B more competitive?
Type A through HEC is generally more competitive because Pakistan has a fixed national quota. Type B gives you more flexibility to apply to multiple universities, effectively increasing your total chances.
Can a consultancy help with Type B applications?
Yes — and this is where a consultancy like Scholarship Navigator adds the most value. We know which universities have higher acceptance rates, which professors are taking students, and how to position your application to maximize approval chances.
Does Type A or Type B give a better scholarship package?
Type A always includes the full package. For Type B, always verify whether stipend is included before accepting. A full Type B offer is equally good — but a partial Type B without stipend is significantly less valuable.
